(IPYS/IFEX) – On 13 December 2005, journalist Emy Martínez and photojournalist Johan Rojas, of the regional newspaper “El Nuevo Día”, were threatened by the governor of the eastern state of Anzoátegui, Tarek William Saab, during the inauguration of a new street in Barcelona, the state capital.
The governor invited the media to the event. However, when he realized Rojas was present, Saab ordered him to stop taking pictures and insulted him. Then, turning to Martínez, he declared that “all those who work in ‘El Nuevo Día’ are murderers” and “to blame for everything that happens in the state.” Saab warned the photographer to be careful. Immediately after this, bodyguards surrounded the official. The “El Nuevo Día” team left the scene.
