(IPYS/IFEX) – On 28 February 2006, journalist Felipe Tipián and cameraman Levis Cárdenas, of the Tarapoto operations of Red Global television station program “Enfoques”, in the San Martín region, northern Peru, were assaulted by Tarapoto municipal administrator Carlo Magno Pasquel, while they were covering a march by a group of citizens. The official turned his motorbike towards them, rode it up onto the sidewalk and charged at both reporters, hitting the cameraman on the leg.
Pasquel then dismounted the motorbike and insulted the journalists, rebuking them for accusations of mismanagement at the municipality, broadcast by Tipián on his program since October 2005. Throughout the incident Pasquel attempted to stop Cárdenas from filming him.
Tipián told IPYS that he will request special protection for himself and the group of journalists who are investigating the activities of the municipal administrator. Pasquel was in prison accused of terrorism during the 1980s and will be a candidate for the regional presidency of San Martín in the October 2006 elections.
