(IPYS/IFEX) – On the night of 13 February 2006, Radio Javes journalist Raúl Antonio Ipushima was assaulted by several members of a family who entered the premises of the station after the journalist had just completed his program “Hablando con el pueblo” (“Talking to the people”). The incident occurred in the province of Requena, Loreto region, northeastern Peru.
A few hours before the attack, Ipushima had broadcast a report about a feud between two of the town’s families. According to the journalist, the information he made public must have displeased some members of the Mafaldo Meléndez family who, that same night, invaded the premises of the radio station, attacked the journalist and destroyed some of his work material. Ipushima pointed out to IPYS that, before broadcasting his piece, he obtained both sides’ version of events and that he did not add any personal comments.
The journalist filed a complaint with the town’s authorities.
