(FLIP/IFEX) – After a lengthy struggle to survive injuries inflicted during a 4 February 2006 attempt on his life in Montería, capital of Córdoba department, journalist Gustavo Rojas Gabalo died on 20 March at the Salucoop clinic in Medellín, capital of the neighbouring department of Antioquia.
“El Gaba”, as he was known regionally, had been convalescing in the Central Clinic of Montería from the day of the murder attempt until 12 March, when he was considered sufficiently well to be released. On 17 March, he suffered a setback which resulted in his return to the clinic and subsequent transfer to Medellín.
During that period, National Police commander for Montería Coronel Jaime Orlado Velasco had told FLIP that investigations of the attempt on Roja’s life were continuing, but that due to Rojas’s state of health, the journalist had not been able to discuss the matter with the prosecutor’s office.
