(IPYS/IFEX) – On 21 April 2006, a group of supporters of Ollanat Humala Tasso, presidential candidate for the political association Unión por el Perú (UPP), assaulted the journalists who were covering the taping of a publicity video in the country club Portada del Sol in Chosica, a district of Lima. When he noticed the presence of media cameras, the candidate decided to suspend the taping of the video, got into his car and left. His security personnel stopped the journalists from following him. It was then that his supporters started throwing stones at the reporters and their media vehicles.
Humala’s supporters insulted the journalists and accused them of having sold their allegiance to certain political groups.
IPYS condemns violent actions by the supporters of any political association against journalists and will request of Humala and the leaders of his party that they discourage such attitudes among their supporters.
