(IPYS/IFEX) – On the afternoon of 25 May 2006, Walter Rocha Chocos, editor and host of AMR TV station news program “Día a Día”, in Huaraz, northwestern Peru, received a threatening call to his mobile phone in which he was warned that there would be an attempt on his life. Rocha was able to record the threat. On the same day, a Red Global Huaraz journalist, Gudelia Gálvez Tafur, received a similar threat, also to her mobile phone. Both journalists stated that the voice on both phone calls was the same and that it could belong to the Head of Public Services of the Provincial Government of Huaraz, Augusto Rojo Ángeles.
According to Rocha, Rojo’s threats could be a response to the 23 May broadcast of a press conference in which several provincial government aldermen made accusations of corruption that compromised the official.
IPYS tried to contact Rojo several times but was told by his office personnel that they do not know his whereabouts.
The journalists have requested protection from Ancash’s prefecture.
