(IPYS/IFEX) – On the morning of 9 June 2006, journalist Eliot Coc Aguilar, editor of Radio Calor’s news programme “Contacto Directo”, was assaulted by Juan Valdez Inga, an administrative employee of the Local Education Management Unit (Unidad de Gestión Educativa Local, UGEL-Casma). The attack took place in Casma, Ancash region, northwestern Peru, when the journalist was gathering information at the educational institution. Valdez approached Coc Aguilar and hit him.
The journalist attributed the assault to criticisms broadcast via his programme of regional councillor Roy Ipanaqué, for administrative irregularities committed by him during his time in office. According to Coc Aguilar, Valdez belongs to the councillor’s inner circle.
The journalist suffered several injuries and a broken rib. He has been admitted to Casma’s San Ignacio Hospital.
