(IPYS/IFEX) – On 4 July 2006, reporter Henry Chuchón, of the Canal 25 television channel, and Carlos Rojas from the “Jornada” daily were assaulted by a group of supporters of the nationalist political movement “Partido Nacionalista Peruano”. The attackers took Chuchón’s television camera. The incident took place in the Ayacucho region, to the southeast of Lima.
The reporters were covering a peasant demonstration against the signing of the Free Trade Agreement with the United States. A group of nationalist supporters dressed in military attire joined the march and started to hit the journalists. Rojas was able to flee but Chuchón was surrounded and beaten. Some minutes later, police officers helped him to recover his camera.
The journalists filed a complaint with the Huamanga police in which they stated that several of the nationalists were drunk.
