(IPYS/IFEX) – Since 15 July 2006, journalist Ronald Márquez Rosales, the director of the news programme “Casma al Día” on the television station Sideral TV Canal 7, has been the victim of repeated threats and harassment.
The first incident occurred when a resident from the area around Casma, a city in northwestern Peru, warned the journalist that he had been hired to give him a beating. The journalist informed IPYS that he receives regular threatening phone calls from unknown persons who watch his house and follow him on motorcycles.
According to Márquez, the threats stem from comments he made on his programme about how the police used money that was donated for the purchase of a motorcycle. He does not dismiss the possibility that the threats have been ordered by a Casma police official.
The journalist has not requested protection from authorities as he does not trust the officials of the Sub-Prefecture, who work with local police.
