(IPYS/IFEX) – On the night of 17 September 2006, radio station La Caribeña journalist Hemeter Gerónimo Córdova was assaulted by Hubert Martínez Espítiritu, whose father is running for mayor of the city of Piscobamba, Ancash region, in the country’s northeast.
According to station director Otilio Ríos, the beating was carried out on one of the city’s streets. Martínez Espítiritu demanded that the journalist broadcast, free of charge, political advertising for his father, Óscar Martínez, the candidate for the Aprista Peruano party. When Córdova refused, the assailant hit him. The journalist was taken to the nearby town of Pomabamba for hospitalisation. His current condition is unknown.
Ríos told IPYS that this is the second time Mártinez has assaulted the journalist.
Córdova’s relatives reported the incident to area police.
