(IPYS/IFEX) – On 22 September 2006, the premises of radio station “La Maripeña” were attacked by the head of security of the region of Sucre, state of Bolivar, in southern Venezuela, and by one of the mayor’s bodyguards.
The assailants broke through the station’s protective fence and threw stones against the building’s facade. The two men reacted violently when they realized that they were being photographed by the radio’s director, Francisco Guillén, as they guarded official City Hall vehicles during a miners’ protest. The event took place in Maripa, a town in the division of Sucre, Bolivar state.
After the attack, the assailants stole one of the radio’s electricity transmitters, causing a power outage. The station was able to resume broadcasting two days after the incidents.
