(IPYS/IFEX) – On 21 November 2006, journalist Alexis Carrasco Ipanaqué, a correspondent for radio station Radio Cutivalú, was arrested by police when he was covering the protest of a group of demonstrators against the results of the 19 November municipal elections.
A spokesman for the police stated that they had followed orders issued by the Attorney General’s office when the protest turned violent. The event took place in Huarmaca, in the Piura region of northern Peru.
The commander of the National Police’s First Territorial Division, General Ricardo Benavides Ramírez, confirmed the journalist’s arrest in a conversation with Radio Cutivalú’s director, Rodolfo Aquino, and stated that the journalist will continue in custody while investigations take place.
The radio station is taking legal action to get Carrasco released.
