(IPYS/IFEX) – On 17 November 2006, journalist Ricardo Núñez Torres received a death threat via an Internet message in retaliation for questions about alleged acts of corruption that he posed to the mayor of the town of Aucayacu, Wilder Miranda, who is running for re-election. The town of Aucayacu is situated in the Huánuco region, in central Peru.
According to the journalist, he was warned that he would be murdered if he continued his criticisms of the mayor. Núñez had interviewed the mayor on his programme, “Auca TV Noticias”, on 16 November.
The journalist also told IPYS that on 17 November, as he was walking towards the television station from which he broadcasts his program, he and a local woman passing by both noticed that two of the mayor’s bodyguards were following him.
Nuñez did not file a complaint with the authorities but stated during his programme that if anything happened to him, Mayor Miranda should be held responsible.
Aucayacu is a drug trafficking region that is afflicted by constant violence.
