(IPYS/IFEX) – On 23 November 2006, a Globovisión television crew was harassed, and one of its members physically assaulted, by security personnel at the government’s Casa Militar when they were covering a protest march which took place in front of its headquarters in Caracas. The members of the crew were Beatriz Adrián, Edwin Moreno and José Luis Ochoa.
Adrián ordered her team to leave the area when she noticed that three soldiers were approaching them. The soldiers reached Ochoa and attempted to take his video tape away from him without any explanation. When Moreno, the assistant cameraman, attempted to intervene, he was beaten by the soldiers.
IPYS has issued seven alerts during 2006 regarding harassment of Globovisión (see IFEX alerts of 22, 17, 10 and 6 November, 6 and 5 October 2006 and others). The perpetrators of the violations include military personnel, members of the judiciary and the Attorney General’s Office (Ministerio Público). This suggests the existence of a policy to harass this media outlet for its opposition to the government. IPYS condemns this apparent policy, since it restricts press freedom.
