(IPYS/IFEX) – On 10 August 2007, supporters of the River Plate football team beat a number of reporters who were covering the wake of Martín Gonzalo Arco. Arco, a supporter of the same team, was shot in Buenos Aires on 7 August in what seems to have been a settling of old scores among different factions of the same group of fans.
According to witnesses, the assailants – known in the country as “barrabrava” – arrived at the wake with their faces covered and began issuing threats. They were led by an individual named Adrián Rousseau. During the incident, camera operator Gustavo Heit of the C5N television station received a knife wound in the abdomen.
A police inspector justified the absence of the police arguing that their presence would have been interpreted as an attempt at repression.
