(PROBIDAD/IFEX) – On 23 November 2007, Geovanny García, a television journalist with Canal 13, fled the country out of concern for his safety for the second time in recent weeks.
García’s first departure was in October, at which time he left for Canada with his wife. He did so following an assassination attempt that left him with a gunshot wound to the hand. He subsequently returned to Honduras to take care of a few personal matters, but decided to leave abruptly when he received additional death threats.
The director of the radio station Radio Cadena Voces, Dagoberto Rodríguez, also fled the country on 1 November after receiving death threats (see alert of 2 November 2007).
The national human rights commissioner, Ramón Custodio, expressed dismay at the fact that journalists should have to leave the country in fear for their lives.
“It is unfortunate that professional journalists, dedicated to reporting on topics they feel to be of public interest, should have to leave the country in this way,” said Custodio.
