(IPYS/IFEX) – On 3 March 2008, Globovision television station camera operator Carlos Caraballo was assaulted by 10 policemen while he covered a protest march organized by taxi drivers in the city of La Victoria, located in the state of Aragua, central Venezuela.
Caraballo was hit on the arms and legs. The policemen threw him to the ground and attempted to seize his video camera after he taped them assaulting one of the demonstrators. They were only able to take from him a wireless microphone receptor, which he later recovered.
Aragua police chief Noé Liendo publicly condemned the assault and ordered an investigation into the actions of the officers involved.
The journalist reported the event to that state’s Institute for Scientific and Criminal Investigations (Cuerpo de Investigaciones Científicas, Penales y Criminalísticas, CICPC).
