(IPYS/IFEX) – On 6 March 2008, journalists from several media outlets were pushed around and hit by a group of supporters of President Hugo Chavez while covering a student demonstration for peace in Colombia. The event took place in the city of Valencia, in the state of Carabobo.
The reporters who were hit or pushed around were Xiorland Fuentes and Lisandro Barazarte, of the newspaper “El Periodico”, Carlos Andrés Pérez, of the newspaper “El Carabobeño”, Jacinto Oliveros, of the newspaper “Notitarde”, Alexander Ortiz and Gabriel Obispo, of the newspaper “El Medio”, and Leslie Pedreañez, of Televen television station. Journalists Geraldine Martinez, of the newspaper “El Periodico, Ylian Teran, of the newspaper “El Carabobeño”, and Fanny Gutierrez, of the newspaper “El Siglo”, were threatened and insulted.
The attack took place when the journalists were covering an attack by Chavez supporters on a group of students participating in the march.
Cameras being used by Pérez and Obispo were destroyed in the incident.
