(RSF/IFEX) – Reporters Without Borders welcomes a decision by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to grant protection to reporter Marlon Torres of Radio Sucumbíos, in the northeastern province of Sucumbíos. Harassed and threatened since 9 November 2008 and the target of a murder attempt on 22 December, Torres fled from Sucumbíos on Christmas Eve after learning that a price had been put on his head, the Andean Foundation for the Observation and Study of the Media (Fundación Andina para la Observación y Estudio de los Medios, Fundamedios) reported. A year earlier, Torres also had to leave the Shushufindi district as a result of his reporting on political disputes in the area. The IACHR has asked the justice ministry to aid in protecting Torres.
