A journalist and an academic have received death threats via calls and messages from mobile telephones related to their opinions of the coup d'état.
(C-Libre/IFEX) – 13 January 2010 – A journalist and an academic in the western part of the country have received death threats via calls and messages from mobile telephones, reports journalist Misael Cárcamo.
Cárcamo said that he has received messages on his mobile phone and that calls have been made to the management of Radio Católica Santa Rosa y Estéreo Emeaus, where he hosts the programme “Dando en el Clavo”. The programme is critical of the coup d’état and also promotes democratic values among the Catholic audience in western Honduras.
Cárcamo said that on 9 January 2010 at 1:56 p.m., both he and academic José Salomón Orellana received a message that said “You two sons of bitches, agitators from what’s left of the resistance, you will soon be wearing your death shrouds”.
Another message received between 11:00 and 11:30 a.m. by the Radio Católica Santa Rosa y Estéreo Emeaus management said: “We thought you’d already gotten rid of Salomón Orellana and Cárcamo. We’re tired of hearing their opinions on the radio. This is a warning. We won’t be responsible for anything that happens to those dogs.”
Cárcamo said that the radio programme is sponsored by the Santa Rosa de Copán dioceses and that these threats are similar to others that were received during a district attorney’s hunger strike. Complaints about the threats were filed with the relevant authorities but the investigations did not produce results.
In his report to C-Libre, Cárcamo said that since the coup d’etat he and Salomón Orellana have been committed to and involved in anti-de facto government activities, one of which is their programme, which is broadcast every Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m.
