(IPYS/IFEX) – On 30 March 2006, journalists Manuel Caballero Vidal, a reporter for Channel 13, and Alex Mautino Vidaurre, of Radio Melodía, were threatened by lawyer Danilo Duarte Jácome. Duarte is campaign adviser for José Malqui Beaz, a candidate for Congress representing Ancash region, of the political group Unidad Nacional. The incident took place in Huaraz, capital of Ancash, northwestern Peru.
Duarte stated to them that after the presidential and parliamentary elections on 9 April, he would “retaliate against them” for reporting on the irregularities that allegedly took place during his administration as municipal manager of the provincial government of Casma in 2005. The threat was issued in the presence of a group of Malqui’s supporters.
Duarte had already threatened two other reporters for publishing the same accusation fifteen days earlier.
