The workshop was partially intended to provide young people with the necessary skills to contribute to media freedom in Libya.
(ANHRI/IFEX) – Cairo, July 21, 2011 – Today ANHRI celebrated the conclusion of a workshop on capacity building, development of knowledge for young Libyan journalists and Libyan youth and development of citizen journalism. The workshop was held in participation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and was attended by 21 young men and women interested in the press and media in Libya after the February outbreak of the Libyan Revolution demanding freedom.
The workshop spanned five days and allowed Libyan youth to meet prominent media professionals and journalists, such as Mr. Gamal Fahmy, Mr. Ragaee Al-Merghany, managing editor of the Middle East News Agency, Mr. Hassan Abu Taleb, chairman of the Al Ahram Regional Institute, and Mr. Fathi Abu Hatab, managing editor for the Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper’s website. The workshop participants also went on field trips to a number of newspaper, television station and human rights organization offices, including the Al-Tahrir channel, ON TV channel, Libya Comes First channel, Al-Ahram, Al-Masry Al-Youm, the Middle East News Agency, the National Council for Human Rights and the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights.

“This workshop is the beginning of a series of workshops that will support the values of liberalism and democracy in Libya. The foundation tried during the workshop to develop the skills of these young people to contribute to supporting media freedom in Libya on a professional basis. The foundation used the methodologies of training, field visits and strategy discussions in the workshop and wishes to communicate with the trainees to complete the process to support media freedom in Libya,” said a representative of the Friedrich Naumann foundation.
