Ali Zain al-Abideen, a rights activist known for his critical opinions of the regime, was arrested on 23 December following the publication of a series of critical articles on the website Sudanese Online.
(ANHRI/IFEX) – Cairo, 25 December 2011 – ANHRI condemns the arrest of Ali Zain al-Abideen, a rights activist known for his critical opinions of the Sudanese regime. Arrested on 23 December by the Sudanese authorities at Abou-Janzeer square in downtown Khartoum, the capital city of Sudan, al-Abideen was then escorted to an unknown area.
In several articles published on the website Sudanese Online, al-Abideen called for the overthrow of the totalitarian repressive regime in Sudan and the establishment of a democratic country that respects human rights. Those articles are the reason for his detention, meanwhile his whereabouts remain undisclosed.
A group of activists expressed deep concern, not only over his whereabouts but also over his critical health condition as he suffers from kidney failure.
“Detention of a human rights activist because of his political opinions is unacceptable and reflects the regime’s repressive and anti-human rights policy” said ANHRI.
“The authorities must reveal al-Abideen’s whereabouts and refer him to a fair trial if they have evidence against him in a particular incident. Otherwise, they should immediately and unconditionally release him,” added ANHRI.
