The return of repression following a revolt against a dictatorial regime is very disappointing, says ANHRI, after a large number of people were detained in Tahrir Square.
(ANHRI/IFEX) – CAIRO, August 2, 2011 – ANHRI condemns the raid on a Tahrir Square sit-in on August 1, 2011. The Military Police and Central Security forces raided Tahrir Square using force and violence, leading to many casualties and a large numbers of detainees. In addition a number of people have “disappeared”.

“The return of violence and repression after a revolution against a dictatorial regime is extremely disappointing, and the statements of some members of the Military Council betraying the revolutionaries and describing them as ‘thugs, vandals and agitators aiming to drive a wedge between the people and the army’ are unacceptable,” ANHRI said
“The Military Council has to stop the accusations of treason against the revolutionaries and the various national movements. In addition, all those who were detained yesterday must be released, as well as those revolutionaries who were tried before Military Tribunals. Investigations must be opened into all the violations committed by the Military Police or military personnel. This will ensure the path of the Egyptian revolution and help to re-establish confidence in the Council,” ANHRI added.
