(APG/IFEX) – The following is a 30 April 2004 APG press release:
APG STATEMENT ON WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY
Press freedom, freedom of expression and the right to inform and be informed are basic human rights that should be protected in all democratic states.
The fight to prevent the suppression of these rights, which always happens when intolerance prevails, is ongoing. Guatemala has lived through a long history of this type of intolerance and the fight has left hundreds of martyrs, who gave their lives defending human rights.
The APG, since its formation more than to years ago, has been working to defend freedom of expression.
On World Press Freedom Day, the APG expresses its solidarity with Guatemalan journalists and calls upon those in power to respect the right to inform and be informed, and freedom of expression in general.
In recent years, Guatemalan journalists have constantly been abused and the APG hopes that, in the future, democratic life in the country will be supported by complete respect for freedom of expression.
We express solidarity with our colleagues around the world, especially those who live in countries where freedom of expression is constantly threatened.
