(IFJ/IFEX) – On 27 January 2000, the Argentine radio station Radio Uni reported that a group of reporters from the television news station Cablevision Sur (owned by media corporation El Sol) received death threats after covering and running a story on the burning of garbage in a rock quarry in the west-end of Buenos Aires.
On 19 January, employees of the municipality of Merlo attacked three producers and a cameraman, in an attempt to prevent them from filming the burning of garbage.
Later that day they received intimidating telephone calls, in which the caller threatened to cut their cables and burn the vans Cablevision Sur news teams use to transport equipment.
Recommended Action
Send appeals to the President:
- asking that a full investigation be launched into the threats against journalists from Cablevision Sur
- demanding that steps be taken to guarantee that the journalists’ professional work is in no way impeded
