Recent moves include the jamming of the opposition Lulu channel and pressure tactics used against Al-Jazeera to prevent the airing of a video on the situation in the country.
(BCHR/IFEX) – 14 August 2011 – The Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) is concerned over the ongoing campaign by the government of Bahrain to muzzle and restrict media freedom and the dissemination of information in Bahrain. Such actions have increased in the last few years and have worsened since the beginning of the brutal campaign to suppress protests that began in February, and included the imposition of a state of emergency that ended in early June. The latest moves have involved the jamming of the Lulu channel, a Bahraini opposition station that broadcasts from London, and pressure tactics used against Al-Jazeera’s English service to prevent re-broadcasting of the video “Bahrain shouting in the dark”, which highlights the campaign of repression against pro-democracy protesters in Bahrain.
