IFEX-ALC is deeply concerned with the increase in acts of violence against journalists in Guatemala. Since the new government of President Jimmy Morales began its mandate in January 2016, five journalists have been killed.

The IFEX-ALC network absolutely rejects the arbitrary police actions, to which the General Secretary of the Sindicato de Periodistas del Paraguay, Santiago Ortiz, was subjected this past Wednesday, 25 May. He was detained by force without any justification, in clear violation of the Constitution of Paraguay.

Paraguay at the UN: High hopes for impunity to be subject of discussion

Following a fact-finding visit to Paraguay, the IFEX-ALC submitted a report to the UN Human Rights Council, detailing the context for free expression in the country. Recommendations have now been included in the official stakeholders’ report.

The IFEX-ALC, along with the National Association of the Press of Bolivia will be presenting the alliance’s Annual Report on Impunity 2013 on 21 November, in La Paz. Bolivia is one of the countries in the region in which the impunity for murders of journalists is prevalent.

Coalition submits recommendations in lead-up to UN review

The IFEX-ALC Alliance believes that the eventual acceptance by Argentina, Guatemala and Peru of its recommendations presented for consideration at the UN Universal Periodic Review will contribute to necessary improvements in freedom of expression norms and standards throughout Latin America.
