(IPYS/IFEX) – On 6 December 2000, Peruvian-Israeli businessman Baruch Ivcher Bronstein regained control of the Frecuencia Latina – Canal 2 television station, after Civil Court Judge Ricardo Tobías ruled that the precautionary measure to this effect, presented by Ivcher’s lawyers, was justified.
The businessman returned to Peru on Monday 4 December, after an absence of more than three years. He was accompanied by his wife and daughters, who had been subject to legal harassment, similarly to Ivcher, who was stripped of his Peruvian citizenship and of his powers over the administration of the television station.
At around 11:40 a.m. (local time) on 6 December, Ivcher entered the television station’s studios together with members of his family, lawyers, friends, journalists and hundreds of demonstrators who arrived to express their support. On the previous day, Prosecutor for Crime Prevention Cecilia Vásquez carried out an audit of the television station’s assets to prevent them from being plundered.
At approximately 6:00 p.m., the businessman held a press conference in the station’s offices. He thanked a number of media for having supported him. One of the few announcements he made was that Emilio Rodríguez Larraín was being reinstated as Frecuencia Latina’s director; Jimmy Arteaga will be general manager and Fernando Viaña editor-in-chief. After the press conference was finished, as Ivcher had announced, the television station went off the air and the message: “Loyalty and Transparency” appeared on the screen.
