(BCHR/IFEX) – 29 May 2011 – The Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation has been broadcasting fabricated images and programs aimed at discrediting those who participated in the peaceful protests, says the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR). As well, it has defamed political activists, writers, doctors, teachers and other segments of the Bahraini community, in contravention of all norms and international domestic laws.
BCHR is deeply concerned by the defamation campaign being waged against the opposition, protesters and anyone who has sympathized with them or exposed the authority’s mistreatment of human rights activists and the press and violations of the freedom to association. The Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation, through the Bahrain TV channel, has been waging a misinformation campaign by broadcasting fabricated pictures, scenes and footage since the beginning of the massive protests on 14 February, calling for democracy and respect for human rights in Bahrain. Bahrain TV programs have misinterpreted the people’s demands by twisting and discrediting them, and by monopolizing the visual and audio media in Bahrain and refraining from broadcasting any opinion and information contrary to the authorities’ views. This is in clear contradiction of the role of the media in promoting freedom of speech and supporting peace and understanding.
