(IPYS/IFEX) – On 1 March 2006, businessman Jorge Castillo Segura, who is implicated in a drug trafficking case, threatened journalist Marco Villanueva Escobar, a reporter for the newspaper “Diario de Chimbote”, by making a beheading gesture with his hand. The incident occurred (after Castillo made a statement to the police in Chimbote, northwestern Peru, following the discovery of 10 tons of cocaine in a ship belonging to his fishing business.
A group of reporters waited for the businessman to leave the offices of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the police. Castillo refused to make any statements; however, when he saw Villanueva among those present, he lifted one of his hands to his neck and made the threatening sign. His gesture was recorded on film by Canal N and Panamericana Televisión.
Villanueva told IPYS that he will stay alert and continue with his investigations into drug trafficking in Chimbote.
