The Cairo Head of Security refuses to allow a peaceful march to deliver a message to MPs disapproving of the extension of emergency laws for another two years.
(ANHRI/IFEX) – April 6, 2010 – The Legal Aid Unit for Freedom of Expression Support at the Arabic Network for Human rights Information (ANHRI) has filed an urgent lawsuit before the state council to annul the resolution of the Cairo Security Directorate refusing a peaceful march planned by the 6th April youth on April 6, 2010 from Tahrir Sq. to parliament house. ANHRI lawyers called for the annulment of the resolution and the lifting of all obstacles and restrictions on this march and urged that it be permitted to be staged in an decent manner.
The Cairo Head of Security has sent a warning, that violates the law, addressed to three members of the 6th April movement, to ANHRI’s address. In the warning, the Cairo Head of Security refuses to allow the movement to stage a peaceful march, aimed at delivering a message to MPs, rejecting and disapproving of the extension of the emergency laws for another two years.
ANHRI said, “The Cairo Head of Security has made two mistakes. First, he assumed that the staging of the march is awaiting his approval, whereas the law stipulates notification only and not permission by any means. The second mistake is that he violated a right upheld by law, which is the right to peaceful assembly as a means of expressing opinion. We trust the state council will compel the Cairo Head of Security to abide by the law, as has been the case in previous incidents.”
A lawsuit was filed on the morning of 6 April to allow this march to be staged regardless of any other marches taking place on that same day.
