(IPYS/IFEX) – At midday on 28 March 2006, TV channel 31 “Confidencial” programme journalist Marilú Gambini received a death threat by telephone while she was covering a conference in the city of Chimbote, northwestern Peru. According to Gambini, who investigates drug trafficking issues, a woman stated that she had been given the job of getting rid of her and that the journalist had one week to live. The caller also told the journalist she should take better care of her children as she knew that they were home alone at the time.
Gambini is filing a complaint with the local police. This is the third time that the journalist has been the target of this kind of attack. On 28 March 2005, two strangers went into her home, pushed her around and stole or destroyed several documents related to an ongoing investigation about drug trafficking. None of the perpetrators have been identified. On 21 May 2005, she reported that she had been the victim of a theft after several strangers entered her house, searched through her belongings and took several videotapes. The perpetrators of that incident have not been found either.
The journalist has been under special protection provided by Chimbote’s sub-prefecture since the year 2000 due to the constant phone calls and threats she receives because of her investigations.
