(IPYS/IFEX) – On 5 May 2004, Congress asked for an apology from “Perú 21” newspaper after the newspaper described the government body as “mediocre and corrupt” for having advanced a motion to censor Interior Minister Fernando Rospigliosi.
During the debate over the motion to censor Rospigliosi, Member of Congress Alfredo Gonzáles proposed that, before deciding on the motion against the interior minister, Congress should ask “Perú 21” to retract a 4 May article by the newspaper’s director, Augusto Álvarez Rodrich. The article stated that “being censored by a mediocre and corrupt Congress would be a ‘political honour’ for Rospigliosi”.
Gonzáles threatened to ask the Congress’s lawyers to intervene if the newspaper refused to publish an apology.
Gonzáles’s request was sumbitted for discussion by Congress and received approval, with 57 votes in favour, 27 against and 17 abstentions.
