(IPYS/IFEX) – Eittel Ramos, a congressman for the ruling Perú Posible political party, insulted and tried to assault several journalists as he was leaving a party meeting in Lima on the evening of 13 November 2004. The journalists were trying to obtain information about the meeting when Ramos became angry and began to insult them.
Mauricio Otiniano, a journalist for the daily “Correo”, told IPYS that “one of us asked Ramos why he was acting the way he was and he answered, while still insulting us, that we bothered him all the time. He then tried to hit some camera operators and photographers.” Renzo Macey, of Canal N television station agreed with Otiniano’s version of the events and added that the parliamentarian showed signs of being under the influence of alcohol. In television images, Ramos appeared to be bewildered and was leaning on a member of his security staff.
After the incident, Fabiola Morales Castillo, president of the Congressional Ethics Committee, stated that her group would look into the case and examine audiovisual recordings of the incident. She added the committee would take action even if no legal complaint is launched against Ramos.
Disciplinary actions against members of Congress can vary from a verbal or written warning to a 120-day suspension without pay or benefits.
