(IPYS/IFEX) – On 27 September 2006, Adrián Aguilar Reyes, director of radio station Radio Sideral’s news programme “El Mirador”, was summoned by the police to give his testimony after a complaint was filed against him for alleged offences against public peace, conspiracy to commit a crime and attempted murder. The complaint was filed by lawyer Vilma Melo Toro, an advisor to the Huaylas provincial administration. The event took place in the town of Caraz, Ancash region, northwestern Peru.
Aguilar told IPYS that the accusations stem from his criticisms of the municipal administration of Huaylas province. The journalist stated that in June, for the same motive, Provincial Mayor Julio García Norberto requested that the Ministry for Transport and Communications withdraw the station’s operating licence and seize its equipment. The mayor’s request was turned down.
According to the lawyer’s accusations, Aguilar has roused the province’s inhabitants’ hostility against her through the information he broadcasts.
The city police are investigating the allegations. The journalist has asked the police to allow him to make his statement on another date.
