The attack may be linked to the publication of a story that reported negatively on the conduct of a national congressional candidate.
(OLA/IFEX) – On 5 March 2011, unidentified individuals attacked the “Voces” daily newspaper with Molotov cocktails, in the region of San Martín.
The newspaper’s print director, Julio Quevedo Sánchez, said that three individuals arrived at the building on motorcycles. They opened the door and, after noting the presence of several of the daily’s employees, threw three homemade Molotov cocktails into the building.
The Molotov cocktails exploded and started a fire in the main entryway. The four workers present at the time of the incident managed, with assistance from several neighbours, to put out the fire before it spread significantly.
“This criminal attack caused damage to the building, but no one was injured. However, the employee’s lives were at risk as the area where they were working contained flammable materials and chemicals used for printing,” the newspaper noted.
The incident is under police investigation. It is believed that it may be linked to the publication of a story that reported negatively on the conduct of a national congressional candidate. Journalist Lenin Quevedo received a death threat in connection with the story via a text message sent to his cellular phone.
