Three Molotov cocktails exploded in the offices of the daily "El Heraldo".
(C-Libre/IFEX) – Three Molotov cocktails exploded in the offices of the daily “El Heraldo” on the morning of 15 August 2009, according to one of the newspaper’s executives. Editor-in-chief Fernando Berríos said that one home-made bomb exploded in the building’s main entrance, another in the employee entrance and a third just a few metres from the first two.
Although only three bombs actually exploded, five were thrown into the building. Berríos characterised the attack as a “clear act of disrespect for freedom of expression” and added, “We assume that this has to do with the political situation in the country.”
The police’s explosives unit arrived at the newspaper building and removed the two undetonated bombs. Berríos said that no one has been arrested for the attack but that in the course of the police investigation finger and shoe prints were found.
The “El Heraldo” building is located on Los Próceres boulevard in the capital, Tegucigalpa. Since the coup that overthrew the government on 28 June, four media outlets have suffered attacks of this type. The other three media outlets attacked were Radio América and Canal 11 in Tegucigalpa and Canal 6 in San Pedro Sula.
