(IFJ/IFEX) – “Liberacion”, the daily directed by journalist Cesar Hildebrandt, condemned the negative attitude of the President’s Press Office before the Journalistsâ Human rights office of the IFJâs Human Rights section for Latin America. Despite repeated requests, the Press Office has thus far failed to provide official authorisation or accreditation to “Liberacion” reporters.
“Liberacion” reported that on 7 January 2000 they faxed a letter to the head of the Press Office, Carlos Orellana, telling them which writers and photographers would cover the activities of President Alberto Fujimori.
Due to the lack of response, the newspaper submitted the request for accredication a second time, because it is essential that they have it in order to cover the president’s public activities.
“Liberacion” explained that they have also tried to communicate with Orellana, but the response they have received is that he was busy or had left the office.
“Liberacion” newspaper openly opposes Fujimori’s government, and criticises his management of governmental affairs on an on-going basis. Their journalists’ stance has resulted in the government’s cancellation of television and radio programs directed by Hildebrandt, through legal measures and pressure on businesses. This occurred with the programme Enlace Global, which was broadcast by channel 13, and most recently with Radio 1160’s programme Ecos de Libertad (Echoes of Freedom). Radio 1160’s transmission equipment was seized because of a debt, despite the fact that the owner was prepared to pay it.
