(FLIP/IFEX) – Donald Montaño, a cameraman for Canal Caracol television station in Valledupar, northwestern Colombia, has been held in a restroom in the city’s La Nevada Hospital since the morning of 4 November 2004. Montaño was detained by demonstrators who took over the hospital on 1 November, protesting their eviction from their homes.
Another cameraman, Ali Daza Sierra, of RCN television station, was verbally assaulted by the demonstrators, who also seized the videotape on which he had filmed several protestors ransacking one of the hospital’s ambulances.
In discussions with FLIP, the Cesar department police commander, Colonel Orlando Pineda, said that he would investigate the incident and implement the necessary measures to ensure Montaño’s safety.
FLIP will continue to follow developments in Valledupar and provide updates with respect to any further incidents against the press in the region.
