On the morning of 4 July 2013, unidentified persons detonated an explosive at the door of Radio Tropicana, a station that has operated since 2011 in the province of Satipo, in the Junín region of central Peru. Damages will cost the radio station approximately US$2,500.
On the morning of 4 July 2013, unidentified persons detonated an explosive at the door of Radio Tropicana, a station that has operated since 2011 in the province of Satipo, in the Junín region of central Peru.
Luis Angel Ñaupari Alcoser, the station’s administrator and journalist who also lives near the station, told IPYS that he woke up in the early hours of the morning because he heard noises and he was about to turn on the alarm when the explosive went off causing damage to the recording and sound control equipment, the corridor, administration area and recording room. According to Ñaupari, the damages will cost the radio station 8 thousand nuevos soles (U.S. $2,500 approx).
The journalist told IPYS that during the week he had used his program to question the administration of the district municipality of Río Negro, sanctioned by the Ministry of Labor for a breach of labor regulations.
The matter is now the subject of investigation by the Public Prosecutor and the National Police.
IPYS calls on the authorities for the prompt clarification of these events in the interest of guaranteeing the full exercise of freedom of expression.
