(IPYS/IFEX) – On 14 May 2008, journalist Mabel Cáceres, editor of the weekly “El Búho”, received at her home an envelope with a death threat from an anonymous source. The incident took place in the Arequipa region of southern Peru. Cáceres is also a correspondent for IPYS in that region.
The journalist told IPYS that the note refers to “the party” and says that, at the orders of the party and of the “women who work in its periphery”, the journalist will be “destroyed”. The note also refers to the weekly Cáceres edits and to the accusations it has published.
In its last two issues, “El Búho” reported on allegations against Arequipa’s former regional president, Daniel Vera Ballón, who is also member of the Partido Aprista Peruano (APRA) political party, which is currently in power at the national level. Cáceres believes the threat she received is related to the publication of these allegations.
