Report on elections and freedom of expression in Colombia
FLIP, the Antonio Nariño Project (PAN) and the Instituto de Prensa y Sociedad (IPYS) have published a report on the elections and freedom of expression in Colombia.
The report highlights the limitations placed on freedom of expression and access to information during the presidential campaign over the past six months.
The report provides context, analysis and a detailed list of violations against and limitations to press freedom during the election.
The following information is available in the report:
– Military and paramilitary sponsored intimidation that occurred throughout most of the country led to a presidential campaign “without pain or glory”. In other words, instead of the media providing a forum for debate, they opted to supply vague information that did not jeopardise the safety of the media or its journalists.
– Though the press has filed very few complaints about threats against them for reporting on or broadcasting public service announcements from presidential candidates, many incidents highlighted in the report demonstrate a deterioration in press freedom.
