(IPYS/IFEX) – On 2 May 2006, Javier Poma Sotelo and Luis Medina Villacorta, editor and producer of the regional TV news program “ATV Noticias”, and Nilton Rodríguez Soto, editor of the Red Global program “Contacto Semanal”, and his assistant, César Giraldo, were assaulted by the owner of a discotheque and a group of professional football players from Club Sport Ancash. The event took place in Huaraz, capital of the Ancash region, northwestern Peru.
The journalists were tracking the football players inside “Cordillera Blanca”, a discotheque, as part of an investigation, when they were discovered by the owner who rushed towards them and snatched their camera while urging the football players to react. The football players beat the reporters and forced them to leave.
The journalists lost their camera. They filed an accusation at the local police station.
