(IPYS/IFEX) – On Friday 13 April 2001, reporter Clemente Yatas Ayala was physically assaulted by former governor Ney Delgado Zúñiga. The journalist was injured and bruised as a result.
The journalist was attacked by Delgado as the result of reports he had published questioning his aggressor’s management/conduct. Yatas, a reporter for Frecuencia Popular Radio, had previously been threatened and insulted by the former governor, following comments he made on the radio. On this occasion, the journalist was punched and kicked by Delgado.
Delgado, who is linked to the previous Fujimori regime, has been under the watchful eye of journalists ever since the Rioja Civic Committee (Comité Civico de Rioja), filed a complaint against him with the courts for alleged misappropriation of funds.
The IPYS network has confirmed that the attack occurred, with information provided by the director of the Radio Noticias programme broadcast on Frecuencia Popular Radio, Carlos Chira Cordova, and Subprefect Pablo Ruíz Mori, who witnessed the event.
