(IPYS/IFEX) – On 24 February 2009, the former mayor of the district of Padre Felipe Luyando, Ghunter Loffose Grijalva, assaulted and issued a death threat against journalist Wilfredo Narváez, of the Canal 98 television station. The district of Padre Felipe Luyando is located in Tingo María, in the Huánuco region of central Peru.
Narvaéz told IPYS that he was caught unawares in the street by the former mayor, who punched him in the face and knocked him down. Loffose then kicked him and threatened to kill him.
According to the journalist, Loffose’s actions were probably in retaliation for opinions that Narváez has broadcast on his programme about accusations of embezzlement against the former mayor, and his complaint that even though Loffose has been declared to be in contempt of court the authorities have failed to take action against him.
The journalist requested protection from the governor of Tingo María and filed a complaint against Loffose at the Prosecutor’s Office.
