The former prime minister under Alberto Fujimori, Javier Valle Riestra, verbally attacked journalists from a number of media outlets, according to a 4 February 2000 report in the daily “Liberacion.” The incident occurred in a hotel in downtown Lima, where Valle Riestra had just released a legal publication.
As reported in “Liberacion”, the former minister reacted angrily after “a member of his security personnel attacked a ‘Liberacion’ reporter and photographer Jair Ramírez”, who tried to approach Valle Riestra to ask for his comments on political matters. “Liberacion” went on to add that: “When the other journalists gathered because of the incident, in order to ask Valle Riestra the identity of the attacker who was with him, he replied with insults and improprieties”.
In a 4 February article, the daily “La República” reported that “In an incident [Valle Riestra] verbally attacked a journalist.” It further reported that “his personal assistant prevented a reporter from the Andina state news agency from interviewing Valle Riestra.”
