(IPYS/IFEX) – On 7 April 2006, “Últimas Noticias” journalist Jorge Chávez was notified of a legal action filed against him by the former official of the Metropolitan Police Foundation Director’s Office, Óscar Arapé, for defamation and slander. The complaint was filed at the 11th Control Court, headed by Judge Juan Carlos Villegas.
Chávez explained to IPYS that he has not yet been to the court to investigate the motive for the action, but he supposes it must be related to an accusation published 8 January in “Ultimas Noticias”, in which two clearly identified persons accused Arapé and two of his guards of murdering a Metropolitan Police official. Arapé’s version, denying any participation in the crime, appeared in the same report. A few days later, however, Arapé requested the right to answer and his disclaimer was published on 12 January.
