Unknown assailants launched a grenade against the offices of "Zócalo" newspaper, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila.
(CEPET/IFEX) – 2 July 2010 – On the night of 17 June 2010, unknown assailants launched a grenade against the offices of the “Zócalo” newspaper, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, northern Mexico. No one was hurt in the attack, although the building’s windows, an iron gate and some vehicles parked nearby sustained damages.
According to local journalists, the explosion occurred around 23:45 in the parking lot used by the “Zócalo” employees.
Members of the Federal Investigative Agency, the Coahuila Ministerial Police and the Army arrived at the scene to determine the cause of the explosion.
The Attorney General’s Office and the Coahuila Public Prosecutor’s Office have been informed of the incident and an investigation has been launched.
Following this incident and a 22 June attack against the offices of the “Noticias de El Sol de La Laguna” newspaper, in Torreón, the owners of “Zócalo” in the city of Saltillo asked the Coahuila state prosecutor general, Jesús Torres Charles, to provide them with protection.
According to local media, since that time, officers from the Coahuila Investigative Police and the Saltillo Municipal Police have kept guard near the paper’s offices in the Rancho de Peña neighbourhood.
“Zócalo” is continuing to publish as normal and thus far has not issued a press statement.
