On 24 August 2014, militias affiliated with the Fajr Libya coalition stormed the headquarters of Alassema TV in Tripoli, damaged its property, and abducted the employees that were present at the time.
The attack took place after the channel aired a report on the Libyan Council of Representative’s decision to declare Fajr Libya a terrorist group. Alassema TV re-broadcasted the announcement on Nilesat via its reserve broadcast center.
This incident is not the first time Alassema TV is subjected to attacks. At the beginning of 2014, it was bombed, its headquarters stormed, its property torched, and its chairman, Juma’a Al-Asti assaulted.
“The targeting of media institutions and their employees as part of the conflict in Libya is a flagrant and egregious violation of the right to a free press.,” said ANHRI.
ANHRI urges the Libyan authorities to provide the necessary protection for those who work in the media and to ensure their safety.
It also calls on all the warring factions in Libya to discontinue targeting media professionals and journalists and to stop considering them as part of the current conflict in the country.
